All Choked Up

Bob talks, you listen..........

Here is the FNS debut of CHOKED UP with Bob Vlad

Q. So tell us right off the bat what are you more excited for, the new Yankee Stadium or the new Friday Night Softball Season?
A: Well, here's the thing - with FNS I don't think I will have to worry about paying $9 for a beer so I would have to say that the FNS season is a little past the new Yankee Stadium. I am also amped about the new FNS sponsor for 2009. A place very close to my heart.

Q. Describe the likes and dislikes of being Hideki Matt-summa's hitting guru?
A: Matt is quite the student. My coaching has molded him into quite the all-around player. What I enjoy most is that each year Matt manages to show me something I haven't seen before - whether that be in a positive way or a negative way. Perfect example, until FNS the thought of Matt playing short would have never crossed my mind. Being Matt's hitting coach is also a constant challenge. One of my main dislikes is the superstition he holds for washing his uniform. I think of it as quite disgusting.

Q. Off the topic but we need to know--tougher task, breaking out of an Iron Sheik camel clutch or convincing you to take a dive in the ocean ?
A: I think if we were dealing with the Sheik in his prime, that would be a no-brainer, definitely breaking out of the cobra clutch. It didn't take a whole lot of convincing to get me to jump into the ocean. I probably would have even done it for less money.

Q. Not many people know this but you are Richiro's running coach, how has this responsibility affected your daily life?
A: I'd be lying if I said that being Richiro's running coach has not affected my daily life. I think it has given me more of an appreciation for the other side of the game of softball (a side Matt Summa has never/will never see). In the game of softbball, most guys that hit a chopper to the shortstop where the shortstop skips the ball twice on the throw to the first baseman would be out, but not when you're dealing with Richiro.

Q. Rumors has it you will be re-capping FNS games during a weekly spot here on the site, any truth to these rumors?
A: My agent is in close talks with FNS to arrange this. We will know for sure once the season opens, so STAY TUNED!

Interview with Hideki Mat-Summa

FNS has the exclusive interview with the Iron Sheik's favorite shortstop...

Q. What would mean more to you--a chiefs superbowl championship or a FNS city championship?
A. That is a tough question. Nothing would mean more to me right now than a Chiefs Superbowl Championship considering how long it has been for them.....nothing except a FNS City Title! I can only root for the Chiefs and watch them play. I would love to be a contributing part on a Championship team. I have played for General Manager Joe Amori and the FNS Crew for 5 or 6 years now. We have won Division Titles, and played in the playoffs, now it is time to Win The Championship. I know if we all stay healthy and play as a team, this could be our year.

Q. What if Bud Selig was commisioner of New Ro softball?
A. Well in some respects I feel like Bud Selig is the commissioner of New Ro Softball. The comparison could be made between Bud turning a blind eye to steroids and Frank turning a bling eye towards shaved bats. With a blind eye turned to both controversial issues, attendance has skyrocketed, I mean look at our FNS fans, which by the way are the best in New Rochelle! Honestly Bud couldn't do any worse here than he has done for MLB. The other thing to remember is that Bud has money, so field upgrades and equipment upgrades would be more likely. Either way I think you could say that both need to go!

Q. Are the results the same if the ketchup was purple?
A. This is a tricky question. I think the results would be the same no matter the color of the ketchup. This topic has drawn a lot of interest and has been the topic of many a conversation. Let me set the record straight, ketchup does not open doors. It does not melt locks, and it certainly is not easy to clean up. What happened that night was all justifiable and could have been a lot worse. I am just glad that mustard and relish weren't involved!

Q. Is Bob Vlad the Babe Ruth of hitting coaches or was Babe Ruth the Bob Vlad of baseball ?
A. As much as I love Bob Vlad, calling Babe Ruth the Bob Vlad of baseball might be a stretch. However to call Bob Vlad the Babe Ruth of hitting coaches is 100 percent accurate. Bob has been my hitting coach since 2001. He helped me reach the All-Star game my Senior Year of High School. Hell my batting avg. jumped from probably .200 my Junior year to over .400 my Senior year! He was also instrumental in helping me make the adjustments necessary to hit a softball.
While I have put up good number in my first 5 or 6 years, Bob is never satisfied and he has me working extra hard in the cages for this season. Babe Ruth put baseball on the map, Bob Vlad put Matt Summa on the map. He took a decent hardworking player and helped turn him into (not bragging, I don't have an inflated ego) a solid Softball player. While Bob is not my fielding coach, it must also be noted that he values defense as well. If I do commit an error I must have 2 hits to compensate for that 1 error. Lets just say if I don't meet his standards, it is not a fun day in the cages.

Q. On your spiritual trip to Kansas City during the off season did you ever consider becoming a Royals fan?
A. This is a no-brainer, absolutely not. I thought about many things on my spiritual trip to Kansas City like would I make it home alive if the Chiefs were somehow able to defeat the Dolphins? Or could I eat any BBQ food ever again in comparison to the amazing BBQ in Kansas city? I did think about trying out for the Royals.....but never did I consider become a Royals fan. I mean its hard enough rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs (Although as a side note, Cassel, Vrabel, Pioli........winners) but to root for such a dreadful team as the Royals, forget it. The Yankees are and forever will be my team, even if we have an overpaid, hip surgery having, steroid using loser at 3rd base. Even if we have the highest payroll, almost 80 million dollars more than the second highest, and even if people hate them, Yankees forever.

I would like to thank you for the interview and I would like to close by saying....New Year......New Sponsor.......New Rochelle City Champions?????

The Buddha Interview

It's hard to imagine softball as the snow continues to fall on this cold and brisk Monday morning so to keep our minds off the snowflakes here is our FNS exclusive interview with the man, the myth, the Buddha...

Q. You have been attending Friday night softball games for a few years now so what have been some of your fondest memories?

A. To start off I want to thank you for this honor, I feel so LOVED!! Hmm, fondest memories, first and foremost I'd probably say winning, not for nothing but you guys have made it real easy to be a fan and enjoy watching your games. Everyone loves to go to watch a team that wins and you guys do it quite a lot barring a few gut-wrenching playoff losses but hey, it's sports, anything can happen.... I mean if the Celtics can lose to the Clippers.......... I'd also have to say that all of the shenanigans that occur after the game make for some great memories too but that's another story for another time...don't want to get anyone in trouble!

Q. You have often been dubbed FNS's biggest fan, is this because your a loyal and passionate about watching New Rochelle softball or because you are bigger than the score keeper at D’onfrio?

A. Personally I don't really remember what the scorekeeper at D'Onfrio looks like, is he of massive girth or is he as svelte as I am with just a little bit less relaxed muscle? I would like to think that it's because of my passion and loyalty to you guys, I mean Soundshore has a guy named Buddha on their team and you still don’t see me rooting for them, SHEESH!! If it does happen to be because of my size then I guess I just have to be happy that J-Mac PLAYS for you and not ROOTS for you cause then I'd be in trouble!

Q. Do you believe the voices in your head when they tell you that Richiro is using HGH or some sort of supplement to advance?

A. I've learned a LONG time ago that those damned voices tend to steer me in the wrong way so I tend to push them aside and judge people for myself. With a Puerto Rican wife I'm pretty sure Richiro spends a lot of time running from flying shoes and precisely swung kitchen knives so that in itself is intense training and probably where a lot of his dynamic speed comes from...being chased by an energetic older brother all his life probably didn't hurt either. I've had many talks with his trainer and manager, Bob Vlad, about the subject and he's got me convinced that Richiro's a legit speedster.

Q. You started a group called Hoberman’s Heroes last summer; describe the evolution and where you think the group is headed?

In comic books (and sometimes history) anytime there was a great injustice it always took a great person or a group of great people to bring that injustice to light and to rectify the problem, thus, the birth of Hoberman's Heroes. Myself and a select group of people that would rather be kept nameless at this time were amazed at the fact that after a more productive year, our man, Dave Hoberman, was not even listed or pictured in the FNSB team lineup, OH THE INJUSTICE!! We immediately sprung into action and banded together to rectify the problem and in the year of 2008 justice was served, Hoberman made the website! It still brings a tear to my eye... With our constant pursuit we like to believe that good ole Dave will keep getting the recognition he deserves and be forever enshrined in FNSB history! Check the stats, he's on the rise!

Q. Lastly have you been approached yet to throw out the first pitch to commemorate the inaugural Friday night SPX season?

A. No, I actually haven't been approached and that’s ok by me, I haven't thrown a pitch in YEARS and wouldn't want to embarrass myself, my son and the whole Summa Clan...I have a reputation to protect, OHH!!! I like to think of myself as that 10th man, behind the scenes, urging and cheering (sometimes obnoxiously...some teams deserve it) the team to victory from the stands and relishing in the memory later on that night as I kick up my feet and throw back a cold one at Specs.... ahhh, so good. So good that I'm actually going to get one RIGHT now, PEACE, I’m outta here, see you guys in the summer!!

Catchin' Up with Kearns

FNS recently caught up with Hall of Famer Joe Kearns and asked him the all important question on whether he would make a comeback and return to the Friday night softball scene and play for SPX in 2009:

" I will think about softball all though i believe I will stay in retierment. The summer I played with you guys
was so awesome though, and one of the most fun experiences I ever had on a team! "

Someone should tell Joe that the watering hole is a 2 minute walk from NR station.
